Nutrition

Nutrition is the taking in of nutrients from food to provide energy, growth, maintenance of tissue and regulation of an organism’s structure/body. 

Plants:

 a) Plants absorb mineral nutrients from the soil via their roots, up into their stems and leaves.

 b) The leaves contain the green pigment, chlorophyll, to make glucose from sunlight, carbon dioxide and water – known as photosynthesis.

Animals:

a) Eat plants and/or other animals for food

b) The digestive system (illustrated below) breaks food down into glucose, fatty acids, glycerol and amino acids.
