Cardinal, Ordinal and Nominal Numbers

Cardinal numbers 

Indicate counting (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc)

 

Ordinal numbers 

The order of something (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc) 

 

Nominal numbers

Names something (shirt number7, number 48 bus etc)

Cardinal is counting, while ordinal nearly says order and nominal nearly says name.

 

Examples

1. Cardinal numbers

A count of things is a cardinal number

Examples of cardinal numbers would be 22 cars, 2 puppies or 6 friends.

 

2.  Ordinal numbers

An order number is an ordinal

Examples of ordinal numbers would be the 3rd in line of a queue or the 2nd fastest.

 

3.  Nominal numbers

A number naming something is nominal such as 36 bus or shirt number 7

Examples of nominal numbers would be shirt number 7 and bus number 36.
