Why binomial names are in Latin

You will have noticed that the binomial names are in Latin. In the binomial system, Latin names are used worldwide so there is a common language, and no one is ever in any doubt as to what species is being referred to.

The first part of the name always starts upper case (begins with a capital letter), while the second part is always lower case (uncapitalised).

Mnemonic to show that the first word starts with a capital and second doesn’t.

At an airport in Latin America (Latin), the upper case was loaded into the taxi first, and the lower case was put in second.
