The reaction between magnesium and hydrochloric acid
The salt produced when magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid is magnesium chloride.
Magnesium | + | Hydrochloric acid | → | Magnesium chloride | + | Hydrogen |
Mg | + | 2HCl | → | MgCl2 | + | H2 |
Magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas. The reaction does not produce enough heat to ignite the hydrogen gas given off.
