Mammoth Memory

alkali metals – the elements in group 1 of the periodic table

(pronounced al-kuh-lahy)

To remember the meaning of alkali metals, use the following mnemonic:

If you use a rhyme to remember numbers then the number one would be bun

One = Bun

To remember that alkali metals are in group one use:

The alcoholic was lying (alkali) down and eating metal (alkali metals) parts in a bun (in group 1).

The alkali are the elements in group 1 of the periodic table. Group 1 is the left hand column of the periodic table. They include elements such as lithium (li), sodium (Na), and potassium (K). They are know for being soft, shiny and highly reactive metals (especially with water) that must be stored in oil to prevent reaction with air and water. They are known for having one electron in their outermost shell. They react with water to form an alkaline metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

For example.

They react with water to form an alkaline metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

Lithium has 2 shells the inner with 2 electrons and outer containing one with a mass of 3

Sodium has 3 shells, the inner and middle shells are full and the outer contains one electron, it has a mass of 11

Potassium has 4 shells the inner, second and third shells are full and the outer contains 1 electron
