Mammoth Memory

Discovery of Murder (Act 2, Scene 3)

Macduff and Lennox arrive at Macbeth's castle to see King Duncan

Macduff and Lennox arrive at Macbeth's castle to see King Duncan, and a drunken porter answers the door. The porter jokes about his role as a gatekeeper to hell, linking it to the chaos of the night. Macduff and Lennox are there to wake Duncan, and Macbeth greets them, feigning ignorance about the King's sleep. Macduff discovers Duncan's murder and raises the alarm, waking the entire castle. Macbeth then claims he killed the chamberlains (guards) in a fit of rage, further complicating the situation. Lady Macbeth pretends to faint, distracting from Macbeth’s suspicious behaviour. Macduff is suspicious of Macbeth's rash actions. Duncan's sons, Malcolm and Donalbain whisper to each other. They are not so easily deceived and they know their lives are in great danger and so plan to leave Scotland, with Malcolm going to England and Donalbain to Ireland.
