Connecticut is one of the states of the New England region in the North East of the USA. The third-smallest state by area, it has a population of more than 3.5 million people who have the highest income per head of population than any other U.S. state. Finance and insurance is Connecticut's biggest industry, followed by real estate and manufacturing. Most of western and southern Connecticut has strong links with New York City; this is the most affluent and populous region of the state, with high property prices and high incomes. Although Connecticut is a relatively small state, it has wide regional variations in its landscape, from rolling mountains in the northwest to coastal marshes in the southeast, along Long Island Sound.
The state capital, Hartford, was the richest city in America following the Civil War. Now, it is one of the poorest – even though Connecticut as a whole has a high average income. Three out of ten families in Hartford live below the poverty threshold. The city has a population of around 122,000. Many insurance companies are based in Hartford, a fact that has earned it the title "the insurance capital of the world". Other industries include services, education and healthcare.
