A consumer is an organism that can't produce its own food and must obtain energy by eating other organisms. Consumers are part of food chains and food webs, and they are classified into different types depending on what they eat. Primary consumers are herbivores that feed directly on plants or producers, such as rabbits eating grass. Secondary consumers are carnivores that eat primary consumers, like foxes eating rabbits. Tertiary consumers are at the top of the food chain and eat other carnivores. Some consumers, called omnivores, eat both plants and animals. Consumers play an important role in ecosystems by transferring energy from one trophic level to the next and helping to control the population sizes of other organisms.
