The latissimus dorsi is a large, flat muscle located in the back that extends from the lower spine and pelvis to the upper arm bone (humerus). It is one of the widest muscles in the human body, often called the "lats", and forms much of the middle and lower back. The primary functions of the latissimus dorsi include pulling the arms toward the body (adduction), rotating the arms inwards, and extending the arms backwards from a raised position. This muscle is particularly important for activities like swimming, rowing and pull-ups, where you need to pull your body weight or move your arms in a downward and backward motion.
