Mammoth Memory

movement – the ability of living organisms to change their position or move parts of their body

To remember the meaning of movement, use the following mnemonic:

There is so much movement in musical chairs when you keep having to change position

There is so much movement in musical chairs when you keep having to change position

In animals, movement includes walking, swimming or flying, while in plants it includes growth towards light (phototropism) or roots growing towards water.

Plants also exhibit various types of movement. While they don't move in the same way animals do with muscles, plants can display:

1. Growth movements:

  • Phototropism - Plants bend or grow towards a light source.
  • Gravitropism - Roots grow downwards (positive gravitropism) and shoots grow upwards (negative gravitropism) in response to gravity.
  • Hydrotropism - Roots can bend towards a source of water.

2. Rapid movement:

  • Some plants, like the venus flytrap, can snap their leaves shut in response to touch.

3. Other movements:

  • Movement of live sap through a plant.
  • Absorption of water into a leaf can cause movement in leaves.
  • Leaves can close at night.

In essence, plants are capable of a wide range of movements, though they may be slower and less obvious than animal movements.
