A pooter (also known as an aspirator) consists of a small jar with two flexible tubes inserted through the lid. One tube, called the collecting tube, is placed near the insect, while the other, called the inhalation tube, is used to suck in air. A fine mesh filter is placed inside on the inhalation tube to prevent the insect from accidentally being inhaled. When the user sucks on the inhalation tube, air is drawn into the jar through the collecting tube, pulling the insect into the tube without harming it. 

Pooters are especially useful for studying insects in their natural habitats without touching them directly.
