Solvent – Can dissolve other molecules; can break apart another molecule to form a solution
(Pronounced sol-vuhnt)
Water is the universal solvent. Because of its polarity and ability to form hydrogen bonds, water makes an excellent solvent meaning it can dissolve other molecules.
To remember what solvent means, remember the following mnemonic that associates solvent with the word water:
SOLVENT think WATER
The mood was solemn at the event (solvent) after the rain water washed everything away.
If you ever put sugar or salt in water and stirred you will see the sugar or salt disappear. The sugar and salt have dissolved.
