Hypothesis – An idea or explanation not yet proven
(Pronounced high-poth-uh-siss)
To remember the definition of the word hypothesis, use the following mnemonic:
High on pot, but this (hypothesis) Government says it won't cause problems and it should be legalised. However, this idea is not yet proven.
Examples of hypothesis in a sentence
The scientist’s hypothesis did not stand up, since research data was inconsistent.
A hypothesis was presented by the panel, giving a likely explanation for why the trial medicine didn’t seem to have much of an effect on the patients.
During the study, the researcher changed her hypothesis to a new assumption that fit with current data.
