Precedent – event regarded as a guide for the future

Precedent refers to an ealier event or action regarded as a guide in later, similar circumstances.
To remember the definition of the word precedent, use the following mnemonic:
She pressed the dent (precedent) in the right place as she knew this would pop back out, because she had done this once before.
Examples of precedent in a sentence
Before acting, we should look at the precedent we are setting.
The teachers were concerned that a precedent might have been set.
We should be following the precedent set by Europe.
