We find that Macbeth has sent not only two to kill Banquo and Fleance but a third man too

We find that Macbeth has sent not only two to kill Banquo and Fleance but a third man too.  They attack Banquo and his son Fleance as they near the castle. Banquo recognises the treachery and urges Fleance to flee and avenge his death before being killed by the murderers. Fleance escapes in the ensuing darkness after one of the murderers puts out a torch. The murderers, realising Fleance's escape, leave to inform Macbeth of the incomplete task.
