Banquo's ghost at banquet (act 3, scene 4)

A banquet is held at the royal palace. Macbeth is informed that Banquo is dead, but Fleance escaped. Lady Macbeth asks Macbeth to entertain the guests at the banquet. During the feast, Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost, invisible to everyone else, and is terrified. Lady Macbeth tries to downplay his reaction, suggesting it's a temporary fit, and scolds him for his behaviour. The ghost disappears and Macbeth continues to claim he saw it. The ghost reappears and Macbeth rages at it for a while and then it disappears again. Lady Macbeth urges the guests to leave, and they depart, bewildered. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are left alone, and Macbeth expresses his fears. Macbeth also notes that Macduff declined the invitation to the banquet, which further fuels his paranoia. Macbeth expresses his intentions to visit the Witches. Lady Macbeth suggests sleep.
