Lady Macduff expresses anger and confusion over her husband's sudden departure for England, fearing for her family's safety.  Ross attempts to reassure her but ultimately departs, leaving her vulnerable. Lady Macduff tells her son that his father is dead, though the boy doesn't believe her. A messenger warns Lady Macduff that she is in danger and urges her to flee, but she hesitates. Murderers arrive seeking Macduff. The murderers kill Lady Macduff's son after he bravely defends the honour of his father. Lady Macduff flees, pursued by the murderers. (We learn later that she is caught and murdered.)
