Cat – el gato
(Pronounced gah-toe)
To remember that cat is pronounced gah-toe (gato) in Spanish, use the following mnemonic:
The cat couldn't wait to eat some of the chocolate gateau (gato).

Gato is masculine, so it’s el gato. Imagine an elephant that has a face like a cat:

NOTE: There’s a feminine version of this word, too – gata. So if you know that it is going to refer to a female cat, or something else that’s female (for instance, you might want to say that a particular girl is like a cat), it becomes la gata.
