scapula – the shoulder blade
(Pronounced scap-yoo-luh)
To remember the meaning of scapula, use the following mnemonic:
The scaffolding around the popular (scapula) tourist attraction fell down when I pushed it with my shoulder blades.

The scapula, commonly known as the shoulder blade, is a large, flat, triangular bone located on the back of the shoulder that plays an essential role in shoulder movement and arm function.
Attached to the scapula are such muscles as the rotator cuff that stabilises the shoulder joint, the trapezius and rhomboid that move the shoulder blade itself, and the latissimus dorsi that assists in various arm movements.
The coordinated movement of the scapula with the humerus is essential for achieving the full range of motion in the shoulder, allowing activities like reaching overhead, throwing, and lifting. The scapula also helps distribute forces from the arm to the rest of the skeleton.
