The sternum, commonly known as the breastbone, is a flat, elongated bone located in the centre of the chest that forms the front part of the rib cage and plays a vital role in protecting the heart and lungs. It serves as an important attachment point for the ribs, with the first seven pairs of ribs attaching directly to the sternum. 

Additionally, the sternum provides attachment sites for several important muscles including the intercostal muscles that assist with breathing by expanding and contracting the rib cage.
