Condyloid Joint – egg/oval shaped bone that fits into a similarly shaped cavity
(Pronounced kon-dih-loyd)
Note: Condyloid joints allow forward and backward and side to side movement, but do not allow rotation (unlike ball and socket joints).
To remember that the condyloid joint is oval, use the following mnemonic:
Earlier you read that Charles could read about his sons medical condition in the tabloids (condyloid) but did you read the other headlines on the paper? The President of the United States had been arrested in the oval office (condyloid joints are oval).
Note: We have also highlighted the word arrest (a wrist) because the main joint in the wrist between the ulna, the radius and the carpals is a condyloid joint.
This condyloid joint below only allows forward and backward and also side to side movement. The condyloid joint is biaxial i.e. it moves in two planes.
As seen in the mnemonic above, we have highlighted the word arrested to help remind you that the condyloid joint is the main joint in the wrist.
