Autonomic system – auto-pilot part of the nervous system, no conscious input

The autonomic system, also called the involuntary nervous system, is the part of the nervous system that controls internal organs and body functions without you having to think about it.

Autonomic = automatic:

Works without conscious input

 The autonomic system controls internal organs and body function without any input

Her automatic (autonomic) response to the cold weather was to shiver violently.

Heart rate, digestion, adjustment of your eyes’ pupils, respiratory rate, shivering to keep warm and many other vital functions are regulated by the autonomic system.
