Neutralisation
Bile function number two: It neutralises the acid from the stomach.
The highwayman is caught whilst painting emulsion and a new trial is set (neutralises) by a seedy (acid) judge.
Enzymes in the small intestine work best in alkaline conditions, but the food is acidic after being worked on by acids in the stomach. Bile neutralises the acid (makes it ineffective) to provide the alkaline conditions needed in the small intestine.
