Animals spread scent telling other animals there is a boundary of a guarded territory

Animals can defend a territory in many ways, such as scent marking, spraying, scratching, displaying and fighting.

Some animals scratch trees to distinct boundaries to other animals 

Animals such as tigers and bears may rub scent glands, spray or scratch trees to identify the boundary of their territory to others.

Stags are very protective of boundaries they fight others for better food and female rich territory

Stags fight one another in the rutting season to acquire the most valuable territory containing the best food and most females.
