Fractional distillation is the separation of different substances (fractions) in crude oil into individual substances that have similar properties and can be used for specific purposes.

The separation of different substances to individual substances for different purposes is fractional distillation — Think of people attending hospital with different types of fractures (fractions) being separated and sent to different areas for their treatment.
