linking supernatural to quotations in Macbeth

To remember all the quotations you need for your exam when the theme is supernatural, use the following mnemonic:

First create a key image for supernatural. One way to remember supernatural (a force beyond the scientific) is the mnemonic "To levitate".

Now create a single rememorable image for each of the quotations that relate to the supernatural. As a first stage, we will reference three quotations:

Quote 1 - Supernatural

"Is this a digger that I see before me, the handle toward my hand?" A modern audience would see this as personification of guilt however a Jacobean audience would see this as a supernatural interference. The quote shows how the supernatural exacerbates his inner turmoil, leading him further down a path of destruction. 

This quotation can be remembered with the single picture mnemonic of a hovering dagger. 

Quote 2 - Supernatural

"By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes". This quote directly demonstrates the witches' ability to predict the future through an unearthly sensation. This establishes them as supernatural beings with powers beyond human comprehension. This line marks the deepening of their influence on Macbeth.

This quotation can be remembered with the single picture mnemonic of a pricked thumb. 

Quote 3 - Supernatural

"Come you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here". By calling on spirits Lady Macbeth shows her willingness to embrace dark forces to achieve her goal. 

Note: This quotation has been used in the theme of ambition too. A single quote in Macbeth can absolutely be used to support two or more separate themes in an exam as many quotes are rich enough to reveal multiple aspects of the play.

This quotation can be remembered with the single picture mnemonic of "beckoning a spirit over".

She was levitated but she wanted to be put down.  

She grabbed at a dagger that passed before her and aimed the end down and it pricked the thumb of the levitator.

The levitator beckoned the spirits over and asked them to bandage his pricked thumb.
