Capital – el / la capital

(Pronounced kah-pee-tahl)

Note: It's 'el capital' when referring to monetary capital and 'la capital'  when referring to a capital city.

To remember that capital is pronounced kah-pee-tahl (capital) in Spanish, use the following mnemonic:

The bull invested all its capital in the capital city's regeneration fund, but never got a penny in return.

Capital (as in monetary capital) is masculine, so it's el capital. Imagine an elephant losing all his capital in an investment fraud.

Capital (as in capital city) is feminine, so it's la capital. Imagine a lady winning the election to be mayor of the capital city.
