How to work out powers (Indices/exponents) on a calculator.

First work out an easy power you know

What is $2^2$ ?

And we know it is $2xx2=4$

Now on a calculator

Always try this easy one first so that you know you are pressing the correct buttons.

Press X^y button

Enter 2

Press =

Answer should be 4.

Now you can go onto more difficult powers.

Put in $4^10$ on a calculator

(Remember this is $4times4times4........$ Ten times)

Press X^y button

Enter 10

Press =

Answer should be $4^10=1,048,576$
