Tidal Volume – Volume of air inhaled or exhaled per breath under normal conditions

To remember what tidal volume is use the following mnemonic:

The tide, all the way along the beach, was coming in a huge volume (tidal volume). It took my breath away. I could neither breath out or in as I normally could. 

The amount of air that is inhaled and exhaled during normal breathing (tidal volume) is typically measured in millilitres. The typical tidal volume for an adult is approximately 500ml. Tidal volume can be affected by various factors, including lung disease, injury and certain medical conditions.
