Kidney size and position
Your kidneys are about the size of a fist. This person with her hands on her back shows both the size and approximate position of the kidneys. Note that the left fist is slightly higher than the right.
The kidneys are located high in the abdominal cavity, partly protected by the lowest rib bones, one on each side of the spine. The right kidney is slightly lower and smaller than the left one, and is placed slightly more to the middle, to make room for the liver.
If you place your hands on your hips with fingers pointing forwards and thumbs backwards, then press with your thumbs, your thumbs will be very close to your kidneys.
