Standard form and moving decimal places

Moving decimal places to the left or the right and remembering what happens to the power is tricky to remember.

i.e. $1000.0=10times10^2$

$1000.0=10000times10^-1$

Move the decimal place to the right
$-1$ to the power
Move the decimal place to the left
$+1$ to the power

Or maybe an easier way to remember this is

Moving the decimal place in stand form can be tricky to remember

The Queens right hand woman (Right) was only small (Small) but you wouldn't mess with her.

Right $=$ Smaller

Right $=-1$
