Refraction and straws

If you look at a glass of water with a straw in it from above the straw will look bent.

A straw in a glass of water shows refraction in action as the straw appears to bend at the water surface.

The straw will look nearer to the surface than it really is.

Looking at a straw in a glass of water the straw appears to be nearer the surface than it really is.

Light travels from the water to the air and then to the observer. As the light travels from slow to a fast medium the light will move away from the normal line (remember FAST SOFA).
