Chanting – Singing or rhythmic repetition of a word, words, prayer or sound
To remember the meaning of the Buddhist term Chanting, use the following mnemonic:
Enchant us with your singing (chanting), they asked the Buddha. He did so, but it was more a repetition of a set of words than a song.
Chanting is a way of learning and demonstrating devotion to Buddhist principles.
It is a way of focusing the mind and therefore closely linked to meditation.
Buddhists chant many different mantras and quite often learn them off-by-heart.
They also sometimes use prayer wheels. Inside the wheel cylinder is a tightly wound roll of printed mantras. The wheel is spun around while chanting a mantra, and this enhances the experience of praying.
