Which Exercises are Sagittal Plane Exercises 

People can easily become confused by which exercises are sagittal. Sagittal exercises are front and back, up and down.

To understand what exercises and movement occurs in the sagittal plane, instead of imagining a single plane down the centre of the body, imagine two planes just either side of the shoulder as below.

To understand what exercises and movement occurs in the sagittal plane, instead of imagining a single plane down the centre of the body, imagine two planes just either side of the shoulder as below.

Any movement that occurs between these two planes or sheets is sagittal.

This would therefore include such exercises as:

1/ Lying hyperextension on the floor - this is a sagittal plane movement because it occurs between the two sheets.

Note: Hyperextension means to extend a joint beyond its normal limits.

Note: Lunge exercises involve stepping forward with a bent leg while keeping the other leg straight.

Other exercises that are sagittal include: walking, running, forward rolls, somersaults, squats and front splits.
