When first starting chemistry think ionic as attracting oppositely charged atoms but usually it got into this situation because one of the atoms first transferred atoms (a redox reaction (see later on)).

To remember this, use the following mnemonic:

I used an iron, and I was quick (ionic) to put a transfer on my t-shirt.

This image helps because you can recall:

  • Ionic is usually a transfer of electrons.
  • Ionic components are between metals and non metals.
  • Ionic example think salt.
