The reaction between iron and hydrochloric acid

The chloride formed when iron reacts with hydrochloric acid is iron (II) chloride, also known as iron dichloride.

Iron + Hydrochloric acid Iron(II) chloride + Hydrogen
Fe + 2HCl FeCl2 + H2

 

Iron unlike zincs reaction with hydrochloric acid is slow and produces much smaller bubbles

The reaction between iron and hydrochloric acid is slower than the reaction with zinc, with much smaller hydrogen bubbles produced.
