The South – think farming
It will help you to remember and explain the American Civil War if you think of the South in terms of S for Seeds, thereby associating it with farming.

In 1860, the Southern States of America produced two-thirds of the world’s supply of cotton.
They also grew large quantities of tobacco and rice, but they had little manufacturing.
Eighty-four per cent of America’s population lived in the South.
