Asymmetrical

Asymmetrical – Not identical on both sides of a central line.

An asymmetric shape is not identical on both sides of a central line

The letter ‘A’ joined to a word means not.

Or

An array of knots, a knot is not symmetrical

The letter ‘A’ joined to a word means not. Tying a knot (A = knot).

If you know that symmetrical means that both sides of something are identical, then it should be easy to learn that asymmetrical means the opposite. The two sides are different. Asymmetrical things are irregular and crooked and don’t match up perfectly when folded in half.

Example 1

A tree is not symmetrical

The tree on the right is asymmetrical as its two sides are not a mirror image of each other.

Example 2

A bitten apple would be asymmetric

The leaf and bite out of the side of this apple make it an asymmetrical shape.

Example 3

Paws are asymmetric

The paw print on the right is asymmetrical.

Example 4

A house with a chimney would not be symmetrical unless the chimney was right on top in the middle of the house

The chimney on this house makes the shape asymmetrical.
