The Amidah – the "standing prayer" which is recited as part of public worship in synagogues

To remember the meaning of Amidah in Judaism, use the following mnemonic:

The Amidah is often referred to as the 'standing prayer' as it is always recited while standing and facing in the direction of Jerusalem.

The prayer consists of 19 blessings, which can be split into three sections:

  • praising God
  • asking for help
  • thanksgiving

 

The Amidah is found in the Siddur, the traditional Jewish prayer book, and is the central prayer used in worship services.
