Energy flow – Transfer of energy between trophic levels

Energy transfer is the movement of energy through the food chain

The energy flowed between trophies (trophic levels).

Examples

Energy pyramid with sunlight at the bottom and the producer next transferring less than 1% of the suns energy to create it, then the primary consumer transfers 10% of the producer and so on

At each stage in the food chain/pyramid energy is lost to the environment through movement, heat etc. This leaves less energy being stored which can then be passed onto the next organism when it is consumed.

NOTE:

An energy pyramid is always this triangular shape.

A pyramid of numbers can sometime be a different shape.

Energy pyramids should be triangular in shape but can sometimes be different
