Infant mortality rate – Number who die before first birthday

Number of deaths before the age of 1 per 1000 births per year

An infant is a child under the age of 1.

Now you know mortality rate, infant mortality rate must therefore be the number of infant deaths per 1000 births each year.

Infant mortality is the measurement of deaths before the age of 1 year per 1000

Calculating baby deaths per 1000.

Example

Afghanistan and Niger have the highest infant mortality rate of 109 per 1000 but Monaco and Japan have the lowest around 1.8 per 1000

Afghanistan and Niger have the highest infant mortality rates at 121.63 and 109.98 per 1000 births respectively, while Japan and Monaco have the lowest rates at 2.21 and 1.80 per 1000 births respectively.

NOTE:

The IMR (infant mortality rate) in developing countries is significantly higher than in more developed countries, typically around 10 times as high. There is also a large variation between nations as to what classifies as an infant mortality. This is due to how they define a live birth and whether a death is classified as a still birth or miscarriage.
