What are the effects of presentational features?
Apart from knowing the different presentational features, you will need to know the kind of effect each one has on the reader.
The list of effects for presentational features is the same as for language features that we looked at earlier:
Understand
Sense
Respond
Remember
Yes, just like writers with their use of language features, page designers use their devices to:
- Help you understand what you a reading
- Appeal to your senses with images, colours, shapes and use of different type styles
- Get you to respond by reading, appreciating and maybe acting on the information provided
- Help you to remember what you have read through emphasis (e.g., words in larger and/or bold type, quotes pulled out of main text and used as design elements). Excellent layout leads you through the page in a logical order, which also aids memory.
