How to work out Indices (powers/exponents) on a calculator.

First always try simple numbers you know first

What is $2^2$ ?

And we know it is $2\times2=4$

Now on a calculator

Always try this easy one first so that you know you are pressing the correct buttons.

Enter $2$

Press $x^y$ button

Enter $2$

Press $=$

Answer: should be $4$ .

Now you can go onto more difficult powers.

Example 1

Put in $4^10$ on a calculator

(Remember this is $4xx4xx4$ ……. Ten times)

Enter $4$

Press $x^y$ button

Enter $10$

Press $=$

Answer: should be $4^10 = 1,048,576$
