Figurative – not literal

Figurative writing is not intended to be taken literally. Words or expressions in figurative writing have meanings that are different from the literal interpretation. This can be very powerful when used effectively.

The figure (figurative) skater said she was as cold as ice. Good job she didn’t mean it literally. . .

Types of figurative writing include metaphor, simile and hyperbole.

 

Examples of figurative sentences

 

He was as hungry as a horse.

She has such a temper, she is about to explode.

She eats so badly – she is a pig.

Her head was spinning with all the new information.
