Jean Michel Basquiat (died 1988 aged 27) – Abstract self portraits of bright and dark contrasting colours with a crown in the picture
(Pronounced jon mi-shel ba-skee-aa)
Basquiat - Basket of art with Basquiat riding in the basket with a crown
A basket of art (Basquiat) carried Basquiat around whilst he wore a yellow crown.
To remember that it was also Jean Michel imagine John (Jean) the Baptist carrying the basket and the basket is covered in shells. John the Baptist is saying look at me and my shells (Michel).
Jean Michel Basquiat created highly expressionistic self portraits and had a very recognisable style. The paintings are of a frenetic (fast and energetic) style.
Much of his work comes from graffiti that he took part in as a child and a deep knowledge of painters from his interest in art museums.
He used gold crowns many times in his work to represent power or strength.
